About Vulcan State Forest

Located in Pierce and Lewis counties in Washington State, Vulcan State Forest encompasses a broad expanse of over 90,000 acres of mixed coniferous forests, including Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and western red cedar. The forest terrain varies from low elevation river valleys to moderately steep hills, intersected by portions of the Cowlitz River and multiple smaller streams. Historically managed for timber production by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Vulcan State Forest balances resource stewardship with public outdoor recreation access. The area supports a wide range of wildlife including black bears, elk, deer, and numerous bird species, making it popular for hunting, wildlife observation, and nature photography. Visitors can engage in mountain biking and hiking on an extensive network of multi-use trails, while fishing is available in the adjacent rivers and streams. The forest features several developed and primitive campgrounds as well as dispersed camping opportunities. Despite its working forest status, it remains a favored destination for residents of nearby Tacoma and Olympia seeking accessible outdoor experiences. Seasonal changes bring vibrant fall colors and snow during winter months, which can affect trail access and conditions. Vulcan State Forest does not have a formal visitor center but is managed to support sustainable forestry alongside recreational use.
